Troop 577 has a rich tradition of parent involvement, and this involvement is what opens the door for scouts to excel. Having parents engaged either as Assistant Scout Master, Committee member, or as an "active" scout parent, the percentage of scouts obtaining Eagle is 84% versus units that have little parent involvement, the percentage drops a great to 53%.
Troop 577 could not function fully or to extent it does without active engaged parents, thus we require a parent to serve either as an ASM or the Troop Committee which acts as the governing board of directors. Currently the Troop's greatest need is for more committee members, many hands make for light work. If working behind the scene is more your thing, versus direct interaction with the scouts in the ASM role, then please visit the Committee page.
As an ASM the Troop will pay for your training which is mandatory but pretty straight forward, just please be aware that there is two parts to the training, the first is classroom work to teach you how to ID poison oak, and other plants and animals, basic first first aid and troop operations, and the second is an overnight camping experience where you will do the practical training such as looking at the different plants, how to cook outdoors, how to organize a campfire, how to make the fire and so much more. Of course you are asking yourself, don't the older scouts teach the younger ones, and you would be right, but who taught them, or be a mentor or guide, a trained adult leader keep increases safety, enjoyment of the program, and scout retention.
So I want to help, I want to be engaged, but how do I know what is Right for Me? Please take this quick parent talent survey to know which direction is "Best" You might surprise yourself. Please complete it and turn it in to the Committee Chair, or Scoutmaster.
